Hi, I recently observed that one of my wooden chair’s back has broken down. So, I looked up how to repair a wooden chair back. Since I work a lot with woodwork to create decor stuff, this was an easier job for me. To repair, you’ll have to use a heat gun to separate the back pieces and trace a cut out of the back portion on a new wood. I’ll share the rest of the process below.

How to Fix a Broken Wooden Chair Back?

Here is how you can repair the back of your wooden chair:

  1. Chairs are made by joining smaller individual parts together. You’ll be able to see where the two pieces meet.

  2. You need to heat along the steam using a heat gun to melt the glue that holds the pieces together. You can alternatively use a hair dryer.

  3. Make one person hold the chair in place and you need to place a wooden block on the inside of the chair’s back.

  4. Hit the wood block carefully using a hammer to separate the two pieces. Avoid hitting the chair’s wood directly or you’ll end up damaging the chair.

  5. Repeat this method to take off the cut-out back from both the top and bottom regions.

  6. Then, trace the cut out onto a piece of wood that has the same thickness as the original cut out.

  7. Cut the shape carefully with a jigsaw. Drill a wide pilot hole with an electric drill to cut the inside areas. The hole should be wide enough for the jigsaw blade to be placed.

  8. After you finish the cutout, insert it and glue it back into the chair’s back. Apply wood glue at all the seams to secure the pieces.

  9. Rub wood filler along all the rough edges with your finger to fill in dense holes and smoothen the edges. Let the filler dry overnight and then sand off the excess.

  10. You can then paint the chair.

This is how to repair a wooden chair back.
