Hi Buddy,

I recently discovered a sizable area of my ceiling's drywall that was saggy, bent, droopy, damaged, mouldy, and moist. This required more than just a quick fix. This made it essential to learn more about the large ceiling drywall repairing process. In order to replace the existing 4 X 8 foot drywall panel with a new one that is the same size, it was advisable to remove the entire panel (or at least a significant portion of it).

I would like to share the remedies / solution about how to repair ceiling drywall holes. I hired a professional contractor for the repairing process. How to repair drywall cracks in ceiling:
  • Clearing Attic:

You need to enter the attic to mend significant ceiling cracks. Typically, attic access doors can be found in garages, hallways, or bedroom closets. Find the location of the crack with the flashlight. fibreglass batt insulation or clear loose-fill insulation.

  • Remove damaged drywall

Cut out the crack's location and 1 to 2 inches around it with a drywall jab saw.

  • Joist dimensions

Measure the space between the joists before you leave the attic. The spacing should be 14 1/2 inches in the majority of homes with joists spaced 16 inches on centre.

  • Make a plywood backing board

Cut a piece of 1/2-inch plywood below that is 14 1/2 inches wide by the length of the drywall hole you made plus 3 to 4 inches on either end, up to 8 feet. If more plywood is required, add it.

  • Cutting the drywall section

To match the thickness of the existing drywall, cut out drywall that is 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch thick using a utility knife. To fit the hole in the ceiling, cut a piece.

  • Affix the plywood backing board

Place the plywood backer board over the cut-out portion after moving it into the attic. Before you go downstairs, temporarily place a large object on the board. While you drill from below, the bulky object will hold the plywood in place.

  • Include the replacement section

Attach the plywood to the drywall replacement part using drywall screws from below. Add more screws into the extra plywood backer at each end, through the existing drywall.

  • Complete and paint

With drywall tape, the repaired section's edges are finished. Cover the edges with joint compound. Sand. Apply primer to the patch before painting it to match the ceiling colour.

I hope this clarifies your query about, how to repair large cracks in ceiling drywall.

How to repair large hole in drywall ceiling:
  • Use a sharp utility knife to score the pencil lines around the hole. To keep the squared hole big enough for the new patch to fit smoothly, cut just a little outside the lines.

  • Install a Wood Frame

Check that the new drywall patch fits into the new hole without having to be forced by holding it in place. Trim the edges of the hole if necessary to get rid of any impediments to a good fit.

  • Over the fresh framing, position the replacement drywall, and fasten it with screws. Use at least 4 screws, one in each corner, and drive the heads into the drywall patch below the surface.

Fibreglass mesh tape should be used to seal the seams around the new repair. At the corners of each piece of tape, overlap the ends.

  • After which apply a first, second, and third coat of compound

  • Finally touch-up and paint the repaired.
