A few days ago, my fridge stopped cooling, and everything inside was getting warm. I panicked and called our local electrician immediately. While he was out of the city, I asked him over the phone how to repair fridge compressor on my own. Here are a few things he informed me to check for fixing the compressor.
How to Fix a Compressor on a Refrigerator?
Here’s what my electrician told me to do on the phone.
- Check the Power: The first thing he asked was if the fridge was plugged in and if the circuit breaker had tripped. Turns out, my fridge was getting power, so I moved to the next step.
- Inspect the Belt: He explained if the belt connected to the compressor is loose or damaged, it won’t work properly. Mine looked fine, but he said to replace it if it’s worn out.
- Clean the Condenser Coils: He then asked me to check the coils behind the fridge. I found they were covered in dust. I cleaned them with a brush as he recommended because dirty coils can overheat the compressor.
- Check the Evaporator Fan: Following that, he said to listen for the fan inside the fridge. If it’s not spinning, he said the fridge might not cool properly, and the fan might need to be replaced. Luckily, mine was working.
- Inspect the Compressor and Freon Levels: If the compressor itself is broken or if Freon levels are low, he said fixing it would require professional tools and expertise. I skipped this step. If you’re also thinking how to fix a fridge compressor, you’ll likely need a technician for these repairs.
- Reset the Compressor: Finally, he told me to unplug the fridge for 5 to 10 minutes to reset the compressor. I plugged it back in, and thankfully, the fridge started cooling again.
His guidance saved me from a bigger problem and saved money. I hope you understand how to repair fridge compressor.

How to Fix a Compressor on a Refrigerator?
The NoBroker electrician suggested me follow the below process to repair a refrigerator compressor easily:
Initially, make sure the circuit breaker hasn't tripped and that the power cord is inserted into the wall outlet properly. If the compressor is still not operating, take the actions listed below.
Switch off the refrigerator's power source.
Find the compressor, which is normally located behind the refrigerator.
Inspect the coils on the condenser. Use a brush to thoroughly clean the coil if it is dirty.
Replace the overload protector or relay with a new one if there is an odd noise. To view the internal components, carefully unscrew and remove the main cover.
Check your evaporator fan. Replace it if it's not functioning properly.
Get a new compressor and replace the old one if there are any leaks or damage.
By following the above steps, you can easily fix your compressor on a refrigerator. I hope you found this answer helpful 🙂

Guys please do not think of repairing a compressor. Trust me such things cannot ever be repaired, even if you plan for it, it will cost you more than buying a new one. When our fridge was failing to get cooled enough I tried to find how to repair fridge compressor. I came across a method of resetting it so I implied it. To reset a refrigerator compressor, you have to:
Unplug your refrigerator first
Turn off the refrigerator and freezer from the control panel
Reset your freezer and fridge temperature settings
And at the end, just give the refrigerator some time to stabilise its temperature after turning it on
On resetting things did not work out for me. I hence hired an expert to get it repaired but a compressor actually cannot be repaired. If there is any connection issue, professionals can repair it but if the compressor fails to work properly, it is time to get a new one. He hence replaced the compressor so let me share how to replace fridge compressor now-
Turn off the power of the refrigerator first and pull the plug out
Remove the back panel of the fridge
Locate the compressor and remove the cover that protects the electrical wires
Remove the capacitor, relay and overload protector next
Let the refrigerant release by attaching a perforating valve onto the process tube
Connect a nitrogen cylinder onto the manifold and inject the gas at 50 PSI pressure
Remove the manifold valve next
Cut the discharge and suction tubes
Remove the compressor and filter
Clean the tubes next if necessary
Attach the cylinder to the suction line and attach the end of the cylinder to the solvent cylinder
Install the new compressor next and do perform the leak test by injecting nitrogen into them
Use a vacuum pump to remove the extra air
Fill the compressor with refrigerant
Install all the parts and wires carefully and test whether the fridge is now working properly or not
So can you imagine how to repair fridge compressor? It is not an easy task hence please refrain from repairing it without any expert’s guidance.
