After two years of installing our new cabinets, the veneer on them started coming off, and it absolutely made the cabinet look cheap and damaged. I consulted with a renovator to seek measures on how to repair peeling cabinet veneer, and he suggested two options: either to glue them again or completely replace them. After checking the veneer condition, he suggested we better replace them, so we did it, but if you feel you can use glue and fix them, go for it.

How to Repair Peeling Veneer on Kitchen Cabinets?

Our renovator suggested two methods to fix the peeling veneer: apply glue or simply replace it. We opted for the second option since the damage was severe and it had to be done in the future. Here are the two processes in detail to help you understand them better:

Glue Down the Veneer

To fix the peeling veneer on kitchen cabinets, you can

  • Start by gently pulling back the loose section with pliers

  • Apply a layer of contact cement to both the particleboard and the underside of the lifted veneer using a paintbrush.

  • Keep the veneer pulled away from the board until the glue dries

  • Once the cement is dry, carefully press the veneer back down and smooth it out to avoid bubbles or misalignments.

  • Attach the veneer in place with a clamp, or place something heavy on top if a clamp is unavailable and let it set.

Replace the Veneer

If the peeling area is too large for a simple glue repair, you will have to replace the entire veneer panel.

  • Start by gently peeling off the veneer from the particleboard. You can use a heat gun on the veneer to loosen the bond.

  • Once removed, prepare a new piece of veneer, align it carefully on the cabinet surface, and attach it for a fresh, durable finish.

So these are the two easy ways to fix your peeling veneer. If you feel you can do it, well and good; if not, hire a professional.
