Last year, I noticed a hole in my favourite rattan furniture. I can say that repairing rattan furniture is reasonable, and can be done in just 5 DIY steps.

How to Repair Wicker Rattan Furniture?

  • To start with the repair of rattan furniture, I examined my rattan and wicker furniture more closely to determine the extent of the damage. This step involves deciding whether to pull the rattan into place or reweave it as a repair.

  • I also ensured the furniture was clean by brushing off dirt and removing leaves. This assisted me in locating additional hidden damages that needed to be fixed.

  • Gathered tools like pliers, wire cutters, and special pulling tools. I got these tools from a nearby hardware store.

  • I had to cut it off as the hole was large and the rattan was broken. I pulled it off with the pliers and pulling tool, then used a wire cutter to remove the damaged rattan.

  • To cover the hole, I prepared a newly bought rattan. I examined the current wicker furniture's weaving technique. Used a needle to assist in drawing the rattan string in and out. In addition, I made sure to cut any leftover and re-insert it beneath the surface.

  • I repaired the hole and then painted it again, making sure the colour of the new and old rattan was the same.

If your furniture is damaged on a large scale, it is better to consult with a professional carpenter or replace it with new ones.

I love my rattan garden furniture because it adds an elegant touch to my outdoor living area. Even though it is low-maintenance, sometimes the woven material unravels or breaks. However, rattan is easy to repair so I don’t worry about it. Let me tell you how to repair rattan garden furniture.

How to Repair Rattan Furniture
  • Firstly, clean your rattan furniture using a clean cloth and warm water. Just wipe the surface and remove all debris and dirt that might get caught in the varnish or glue.

  • After that, identify the areas that require mending. Commonly damaged areas are the arms or legs of tables and chairs, seating’s underside, and the backs of the seat rest where they might scuff against walls or any other surface.

  • If there’s any loose end poking out, then you can easily fix it by applying a small amount of glue directly and tucking them back into the weaving. Just repeat this with all loose ends and let the glue dry for half an hour before continuing. This is an important step in how to repair plastic rattan garden furniture.

  • Look for loose wrappings on the legs of your furniture. These are situated near the feet of the items and are there to keep the weaving in place. If any wrapping comes loose, the rest of the weaving can come to unravel and undone, which makes the furniture look unattractive and increases the repair work. Keep all loose wrappings back into place using glue.

  • There will be some parts of the wicker that might be too damaged to stick back in place. For this, cut them off carefully and make your replacement strands by soaking them in warm water for half an hour. This will ensure they are flexible enough to weave into place. After weaving them into the furniture, secure them with glue and let them dry.

  • After repairing your furniture, you can apply a layer of varnish. This will hold the rattan in place and also add a layer of protection against the elements to ensure long-lasting use.
