It’s a bit tricky to repair a rotted door, but it’s definitely possible. Extreme humidity damaged our old wooden door, followed by parasites. We almost replaced it when my husband suggested we first see if we could repair it. He found some steps on how to repair rotted door bottom online but we realised it was not possible for us to do it by ourselves. So we called a carpenter. However, I can share the steps he followed here.
How to Fix a Rotted Wood Door Bottom?
The carpenter first began by taking the door off the hinges. He said it's important to remove the door from the entrance, as it becomes easier to work with the damage. However, if the damage is not severe, you can keep the door attached and work on it.
Then, he used a drill with a sharp nozzle to clear the affected areas from rotten wood. You can also take a screwdriver or a putty knife for this.
As a next step, he drilled the holes around the damaged area. He said it’s done to remove the bacteria, which might have caused the damage, and if not done, the bacteria may spread further. If there are deeper holes, you must use a tape to fill the cavity first, after which, you can sand the surface, which will eventually make it smooth.
Once he drilled the holes, he filled them with wood filler and epoxy. You can do this by first mixing the hardener with epoxy resin until it becomes a homogenous mixture. Then we saw him applying the mixture to the holes, filling them. Then, with a putty knife, he flattened the surface for a smooth finish.
As a last step, the carpenter sanded the surface, post which he applied primer to make it more smooth. Then, we repainted the door, which gave it a completely new look.
