How to Fix Cracked Sheetrock Ceiling: Simple Process Cleaning up the Torn Paper

Use a utility knife and carve away any stray pieces of gypsum or surface paper that might be protruding out from the wall surface. You require the damaged area’s borders to be recessed inward or flat before repairing the hole.

Applying the Paper Joint Tape

Cut off 2 sections of paper joint tape in a way that the tape's length will extend at least two inches beyond all sides of the hole.

Smooth down a joint compound’s thin layer around the damaged area. Apply the joint tape over the damaged area in a cross-shaped pattern, one part over the other. Press the tape down so that it adheres to the surface of the wall completely.

Covering the Paper with the Joint Compound

Cover the entire area with the joint compound using a drywall knife carefully. Use some of the joint compounds beyond the hole and smooth it down using the drywall knife.

Allowing the Drywall Patch to Cure

Let the 1st layer of the joint compound dry. It may take up to 2 or 3 hours. Once the joint compound is solid and dry, use a drywall sanding sponge to sand down any high spots.

Repeating the Process

Repeat the process one or two times more. Sand between each dried coat until you find a smooth patch over the entire area.

Cleaning and Painting

Use a clean rag to wipe away all sanding dust and paint over the patch area. It usually takes 2 coats of paint to cover the patch area adequately, as the joint compound absorbs paint.
