Hi,

It can be a frightening task to replace a support beam with a load of a full home pressing down on it, but it doesn't have to be. If the load post rots severely enough to become unstable, what begins as an ugly stain at the foot of a support column may turn into a catastrophe. I know this because I’ve been there and done that. In order to preserve the stability of the building above, I have replaced the support beam in my basement and if you are wondering whether replacing a support beam in basement can be daunting or not, trust me it is. But I am going to tell you the easiest possible way to do that.

Get the help of professional carpenters of NoBroker to get your support beam replaced in a safe and sturdy manner.

How to replace a support beam in a house?

  1. Bolster the weight that is above: Replacing a support beam in basement must start with constructing interim structures to support the floor or ceiling at the support location. The surface directly above will always be supported by a beam. On the floor, install 2-by-4 studs on either side of the beam. Put straight studs in between as a helper holds a 2-by-4 stud on the floor or ceiling above for temporary support. Ensure the longitudinal supports are spaced no farther apart than two feet.

  2. Use a reciprocating saw to remove the beam from its resting position: At the places where the beam is fastened to the surrounding framing, remove any nails. While a helper secures the two sections, make cuts in the centre of the beam. Gently remove the beam away from the ceiling using a pry bar.

  3. Make sure there is no more wood that has to be removed by cutting any protruding screws out of the way. This is one of the most crucial steps of how to replace a support beam under a house.

  4. Verify that the old beam's supporting framework is still in place and securely fastened. The replacement beam will be slipped back into the framing at each end.

  5. With the hand and circular saws, carve the fresh beam to the proper length: The circular saw will be used to make the initial cut, but it won't be able to penetrate the heavy beam completely. Finish the cut with the handsaw.

When using power tools to cut, exercise caution and wear safety gear and you will be replacing a support beam in basement in a very quick and safe manner.
