How to Replace Plaster Walls with Drywall?

  1. Remove the Baseboard and Electrical Cover Plates: Using a pry bar, pry off the baseboard to expose the bottom border if the drywall is on the wall.

  2. Pull the Tape Off the Seams: Grab the tape's end and pull it away from the wall, all the way to the ceiling.

  3. Remove the Screws or Nails: If the drywall is fastened, pry out one edge to loosen the nails, then use a clay hammer to take the nails out.

  4. Remove the Damaged Sheet and Clean Up: Remove the damaged sheet from the wall and position it on top of the new one — either on the floor or against a wall — so you can use it to mark the electrical fixture holes.

  5. Prepare the New Sheet: Line up the damaged sheet's margins with the new one's, then use a pencil to sketch the outlines of the electrical fixture holes. Using a drywall saw, cut out the holes.

  6. Hang the Drywall Replacement Sheet: Place the new sheet in place and raise it until the top edge is flush with the ceiling. Using drywall screws, secure it to the studs.

  7. Tape and Mud the Joints: Apply drywall tape and mud to the seams along the two corners and the top, just as you would if you were building new drywall.

  8. Paint the Entire Wall: On the new sheet and all the dried joint compound, apply a coat of PVA drywall primer. To guarantee a consistent colour, paint the entire wall, not just the replacement drywall.
