I had always seen my mother replacing a kitchen sink drain. Cleaning kitchen sink drain frequently is required as if it is not cleaned it might not drain water properly. I always knew how to replace kitchen sink drain but I guess that was more theoretical than practical. Cause I ended up creating a mess. So, I would surely suggest you hire a plumber for this. But if you still want to give it a try the steps are given below:

How to Replace a Drain in a Kitchen Sink?

These are the steps using which one can change a kitchen sink drain:

  • Remove Existing Components: Disconnect the drainpipe and remove any existing strainer from the sink.

  • Apply Plumber’s Putty: Roll a rope of plumber’s putty and apply it to the underside of the new basket strainer.

  • Insert Strainer: Place the basket strainer into the sinkhole, and secure it with a rubber washer and friction ring underneath.

  • Tighten Nut: Screw and tighten the nut onto the bottom of the basket strainer.

  • Attach Tailpiece: Connect a brass tailpiece and insert a rubber compression gasket into the drainpipe.

  • Connect Drainpipe: Secure the drainpipe with the connector ring.

  • Test for Leaks: Tighten the connector ring and check the drain for any leaks.

However, since I have attempted this task, I can tell you that it is not as easy as it looks. If you do not have any experience in DIYs you should definitely call a professional for help.

How Do You Replace a Sink Drain?

  • Loosen the slip nut, which is a ring on the underside of the sink drain that keeps the Tailpiece close to the drain, using big pliers.
  • Remove the Tailpiece Drain from the Tailpiece Washbasin.
  • After that, remove the whole Tailpiece using pliers to remove the second Slip Nut holding the Tailpiece to the P-Trap.
  • To loosen the strainer nut, turn it anticlockwise with a pipe wrench.
  • While loosening the Nut on the underside of the sink drain, insert the Long Nose Pliers into the sink strainer to prevent it from rotating. From the underside of the drain, remove the rubber gasket.
  • For replacing kitchen sink drain, remove the drain from the wash basin from above, and scrape out any leftover plumber's putty.
  • Apply a little bit of Plumber's Putty and shape it into a six-inch long strip.
  • The Metal Flange will rest in the Sink; wrap the Putty around the underside of the Drain.
  • Place the new drain into the opening from above and firmly press it in.
  • Lay a cardboard gasket on the rubber ring and the rubber gasket on the bottom of the drain. As you tighten the strainer nut, place the strainer nut on the drain and then insert the long-nose pliers into the strainer once more.
  • Slide the Slip Nut up onto the Drain and tighten it after reattaching the Tailpiece to the Drain.
  • Scrape off any extra Plumber's Putty.

Hello there. To repair kitchen sink drain pipe, you can have a look at the slip nuts and the rubber gaskets. Recently, I discovered that the water leakage in my sink’s drain pipe happened due to a loose slip nut. I can help you with the complete repair process. You will find the same below.

How to Repair the Drain Pipe of a Kitchen Sink?

I am showing you the process to fix leaking drain pipes. You can find the different methods below.

  1. Usually, a leakage can happen because the slip nuts in the drain pipe are loose. Slip nuts are round materials which join one end of the pipe to the next one. Use a wrench to turn each slip nut in the anti-clockwise direction. After this, open the tap and check whether the leakage has been solved or not.

  2. If you find that the leakage still exists even after performing the previous step, you must check the rubber gaskets. To check, unscrew the slip nuts and take out the gasket. See if there’s any visible damage or cracks. Do this for all the gaskets after unscrewing the slip nuts. In case there’s any damage, replace the rubber gaskets with new ones. When you do so, fix them directly over the pipe and then screw-pack the slip nuts.

As far as how to change kitchen sink drain pipe goes, start by checking the height of the trap arm, lowering the drain outlet’s position, making cuts and connecting the pipes, and checking once for any leakage. That’s all from my end. I hope this helps you out.
