A few weeks back, I noticed that the side of a cabinet that was exposed to direct sunlight started to loosen. At first, I didn’t give attention to it, but as days passed it started widening. I planned to replace it on my own. For that, I looked up the steps that needed to replace laminate on kitchen cabinets. I found all I need is to start with prying open the laminate from the plywood. For that, you can insert a tip of the putty knife. Read on to get the detailed process.

How to Change Kitchen Cabinet Laminate?

After prying, here is the process I came across.

  • Following that, tap the edge of the knife between the two materials using a hammer.

  • If that doesn’t separate the laminate, then insert acetone into the crack and wait for 3 minutes. This loosens the glue and you could loosen the glue.

  • After the laminate is separated, you need to scrape the side of the cabinet to get rid of the old glue.

  • Measure the new laminate and cut it according to the size of the cabinet.

  • Add a thin coat of contact cement to the back of the laminate and on the cabinet. You can use a small paintbrush for that.

  • Carefully place the laminate with your fingers.

  • After that use a rubber mallet and start tapping the laminate.

  • Finally, install a 3/8-inch flush cutting laminate bit into a router to complete it.

And that is how you can change the laminate of a kitchen cabinet. I hope this helps.

How to Clean White Kitchen Cabinets?

0 2023-05-31T14:26:30+00:00

After about four years, the laminated kitchen cabinets were looking really dirty in our house, and the ample number of scratches on them led me to change laminate on cabinets. I initially planned to get new cabinets, but my mother suggested I change them. It was indeed helpful. I saved a lot of money. I will suggest you also know how to replace laminate kitchen cabinets and try it once rather than getting new ones. The steps are easy, but you can always seek an expert’s aid if you feel confused. Let me share the steps thoroughly here.

How to replace laminate on cabinets?

Replacing laminate on cabinets is not a hard task if you follow the instructions or steps thoroughly. I was initially struggling, but with the help of my husband, I managed to change them. The steps for

replacing laminate on cabinets are-

Gather the necessary supplies:

To begin the process, you will need a utility knife, adhesive solvent or remover, putty knife, sandpaper or sanding block, contact cement or laminate adhesive, laminate sheets, roller or laminate roller, and more materials if needed.

Remove the cabinet doors and hardware:

Next, take off the cabinet doors and remove any handles, hinges, or other hardware. Set them aside in a safe place.

Remove the existing laminate:

Use a utility knife to score the edges of the laminate. Apply adhesive solvent or remover along the edges and let it sit for a few minutes to loosen the adhesive. Next, use a putty knife, and gently lift the old laminate away from the cabinet surface. Make sure not to damage the underlying wood or substrate.

Clean the cabinet surfaces:

Once the old laminate is removed, clean the cabinet surfaces thoroughly to remove any adhesive residue or dirt. Use an adhesive solvent or remover and a cloth or sponge to wipe down the surfaces. Allow them to dry completely before proceeding.

Sand the cabinet surfaces:

Use sandpaper or a sanding block to smooth out any rough areas on the cabinet surfaces. This will provide a better bonding surface for the new laminate. Wipe away any dust or debris.

Measure and cut the new laminate:

Measure the dimensions of each cabinet surface carefully, including the edges. Add a few extra inches to each side for trimming. Use a utility knife and a straightedge to cut the laminate sheets to the appropriate size.

Apply adhesive:

Apply contact cement or laminate adhesive to both the cabinet surface and the back of the laminate sheets. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific adhesive you're using. Allow the adhesive to dry until it becomes tacky, according to the instructions.

Install the new laminate:

Starting from one edge, carefully position the laminate sheet onto the cabinet surface. Use a roller or laminate roller to press down firmly and remove any air bubbles or wrinkles. Work your way across the surface, ensuring the laminate adheres smoothly and evenly. Trim any excess laminate using a router or a utility knife with a new blade.

Reattach the cabinet doors and hardware:

Once the adhesive has fully cured, reattach the cabinet doors using the appropriate hinges, screws, and hardware. Ensure they are aligned, and adjust as needed.

Clean and finish:

Clean the newly laminated surfaces with a mild cleaner to remove any residue or marks. Make any final adjustments, such as tightening hardware or aligning doors, and the

kitchen cabinet laminate replacement.

The process is long, but it will all be worth it in the end. At least it is way better to replace the existing laminate than buy new cabinets. I hope this was helpful and that you have understood how to replace laminate kitchen cabinets.
