Hi Pritam, I can help you with how to sand the wall before painting. Sanding is mainly done with a fine-grit sandpaper, a pole sander or an electric sander. Before painting my bedroom wall, I used a fine-grit sandpaper. The flow of using the sandpaper goes from top to bottom. I will share the detailed steps through which, you can learn the sanding process.

How Do You Sand Walls Before Painting?

Here is the stepwise process to sand walls before you paint.

  1. Clear out the entire space before you perform sanding.

  2. Sanding is best done using an electric sander. So, if possible, use that. You can also use a sanding block as an alternative.

  3. Try to use sandpaper with a 120-grit. You will have to change it regularly or whenever the grit gets blocked with dust.

  4. Use the sander from top to bottom with light strokes, working in sections across the wall. You will have to use different grit paper to overcome mouldings. To smoothen the surface and remove small flaws, sandpapers with fine grit are ideal.

  5. Finish by removing any debris or dirt still present on the wall. Use a degreaser or wipe using a wet and soft cloth dipped in soapy water.

This is all I have to share. I hope you now understand how much to sand walls before painting.

How to Smooth Rough Walls Before Painting?

Last year during a painting project in my home, I realised that for a perfect finish, one must learn the best way to sand walls before painting. I saw that the painters ensured smooth surfaces with accuracy, perseverance, and by using the appropriate equipment, for professional-grade results.

What is the Process of Sanding Painted Walls Before Painting?

During the painting project at my home, I closely observed the methods used by painters to sand the wall surface before painting it. I’ll be happy to share the same here;

  • They first gathered a drop cloth, a sanding block or pole sander, medium to fine grit sandpaper (100- to 150-grit), and safety equipment (mask and goggles).

  • Then they used drop cloths to shield the furniture and floor from dust.

  • For walls with old paint, gloss, or a rough texture, they said that it is recommended to use medium-grit sandpaper; for smoother walls, use fine-grit sandpaper.

  • They attached sandpaper to the sanding block or pole sander.

  • Worked in sections, sanding in a circular motion for even coverage.

  • The painters mainly focussed on areas with repairs or peeling paint.

  • After sanding, they wiped down the walls with a damp cloth to remove dust.

  • Finally, they ensured the walls are completely dry before applying primer or paint.

Sanding walls prior to painting ensures better paint adhesion and a flawless finish.
