In most cases, You do not need to remove the emulsion paint from the Walls. You could directly apply new paint on the old wall. But, You have to scrape paint off walls if the paint has chipped or peeled. I learned how to scrape old paint off walls. It can be done in this manner. The process starts by following either of three methods:

  • Scraping

  • Steaming

  • Chemical Stripping

It also depends on the condition of the wall and how many layers of paint are present. The tools required are a facemask.  Cover your furnishings and carpets with dust sheets and also a bin bag to take off the paint.

How to Scrape Paint Off Wall?

  • Removing paint with a scrapper: A metal scrapper or a putty knife can be used to take out paint from old walls. The tool should be held parallel to the wall and all bits of loose paint can be removed. The old emulsion has to be removed little by little.

  • While doing this, you should be careful and not rough the surface too much. If the surface is roughed up too much, the plastered layer underneath is harmed. After the paint is scraped off, the surface has to be sanded using sandpaper.
  • Paint could be taken off using steaming: If the above method does not work, then this steaming method can be used. After putting on goggles and heat proof gloves, small areas of the wall have to be steamed slowly.

After applying heat, the paint can be scraped off using a scrapper. The area should be sanded afterwards.

  • The paint can be removed with a chemical paint stripper: Chemical paints can be used where the paint is hard to take out. Wear proper equipment and work in a ventilated area.

  1. Apply the paint remover on the walls with a wide paintbrush.

  2. The formula should be left unattended on the wall for some time.

  3. The paint can be removed with a scraper after a consistency check.

  4. Grit sandpaper has to be used to smoothen the surface.

I hope this helps you understand how to scrape off paint from wall. You should see which method is best for you and work accordingly.
