Hi. To answer your query about how to seal particle board before painting furniture, it is not the process that is followed as sealing is done at the end of painting and not the other way around. A sealant is applied to protect the particle board from damage and stains and to retain the paint finish. So, we don’t seal the particle board before painting. I am sharing the process to paint and seal the particle board for you to follow.

How to Seal a Particle Board?

Here is the method you can use:

  1. Start by cleaning the particle board. You can wipe off the dust and dirt. Make sure the surface is dry.

  2. Sand the surface with good quality sandpaper. A 120-grit sandpaper should do, but I recommend you ask an expert. Apply light pressure while sanding. Do just enough to expose the wood and remove the shine.

  3. Next comes priming. Use a high-quality primer and apply a thin coat. Choose an oil-based primer and apply it evenly. Don’t go for a water-based primer as it can lead to the expansion of the board.

  4. Let the primer dry in sunlight for a minimum of 1 hour or until it doesn’t dry completely.

  5. Paint the first coat with your picked paint. You can choose oil-based or water-based paint.

  6. Let the first coat dry and then apply a second coat of paint. Let the second paint dry completely.

  7. You can then apply a waterproof sealant at the end,

This is all about the process to seal particle boards. I hope this helps.
