Hi friend. Recently, I needed to seal some plywood before painting, and the process turned out pretty smooth after I researched how to seal plywood before painting. In the process I have visited multiple websites and consulted several painters and finally I decided to go ahead with the planning.

How to Seal Plywood Edges for Painting?

If you’re planning to do this, I am sharing the step by step guide that I followed below:

  • First, I gave the plywood a light sanding. It was already factory-sanded, so I didn’t need to go too rough, just used a 320-grit sandpaper to smooth things out a bit. After that, I wiped off the dust with a tack cloth which is dry, never wet.

  • Next, I applied a wood sealer. I just grabbed one from my local hardware store, nothing too fancy. After the sealer dried, I lightly sanded again using a fine 220-grit paper for a smooth surface.

  • Once the sealer was dry, I coated the plywood with primer. I’ve found that applying one coat of primer is good enough to start painting.

Finally, I painted the plywood edges, to give a smooth, durable finish.Following these steps helped the colours pop and made everything look nice and clean. If you’re sealing plywood before painting, I hope my answer takes you in the right direction.
