With an opening between the outdoors and the inside of your home, there’s a huge chance of rainwater getting into the home, which is both irritating and damaging for your home. This includes doors. Affixing weatherstripping to the frame of the door and replacing the weatherstripping at the door’s bottom only takes a couple of minutes and will help you protect your entryway from rainwater.

How to Stop Rain Water Coming from Door

Door Bottom
  • First, remove the front door by removing the hinge pins. You can take the help of your family member or friend to take the door to your work area. Keep the door on a cloth where it can lean against something strong so you can have access to the bottom weatherstripping.
  • Remove the old weatherstripping using a screwdriver. Pull the rubber weatherstripping kept inside two grooves in the door’s bottom.
  • Measure and trim the new weatherstripping accordingly. Press the rubber ribs into the grooves at the door’s bottom. Make sure the gasket or the rounded end of the weatherstrip doesn’t face the inside. After that, ensure the ribs are forced into the grooves by applying pressure.
  • Tap the ribs into the grooves deeply using a rubber mallet. This will ensure the weatherstrip is tightly kept in place. Tap along the door’s bottom to ensure sections aren’t hanging down.
  • Rehang the door and open and close it a few times to ensure it’s working smoothly. This new weatherstrip will stop water entering door and home.
Door Frame
  • Measure and record every side of the door frame. After that, use the tin snips to cut the spring-metal strips accordingly.
  • Use cleanser and rags to clean the door frame. This will help create a clean surface for the adhesive to stick to.
  • Hold the strips in place on the door frame to check their fit. Hold the ends of two strips together where they’ll meet in the door frame corners so they fit perfectly. Trim as required.
  • Peel the adhesive backing from one of the strips. Keep it on the frame of the door so the flared edge virtually touches the doorstop. After that, press the strip into place. Repeat this process with the other strips.
  • Open the stripping’s flared end using the screwdriver. Now, make sure the stripping is perfectly pressed against the closed door by opening and closing the door a couple of times.

I learned that one of the major reasons for rainwater slipping from under the door is because of inadequate caulking or improper door installation. In my case, it was inadequate caulking. So, how did I know that? I noticed that the exterior door was leaking, and I did some research around that to learn about the cause. The solution to this issue I found was replacing the caulk. So, if you are trying to learn how to stop rain water coming from door, read along.

How to Prevent Rain Water from Entering Your Door?

To prevent rain from entering, you start by changing the caulking. For that, you need to remove it first, and clean it. Use normal household cleaners to get rid of the dirt from the door frame. After that, you can follow the below steps.

  • Take a putty knife and utility knife and remove as much caulking as possible without damaging the door.

  • Use a rag to remove the caulk particles and then clean the gap using rubbing alcohol.

  • After it dries, use a caulk bead along the frame of the door.

  • Smooth the caulk using your wet finger.

  • Next, apply painter's tape over it.

And that’s it. This is how to stop rainwater coming in door. I hope you find these steps helpful.
