At my home, there are so many taps and sometimes kids leave at least one of them open or play and handle them roughly. This way, dealing with water leakage has become a routine task for me. Since I didn’t want my water bill to shoot up just because of a tiny leak, I learned how to stop water leakage from tap.

How to Stop Leaking Water from Tap?

Here are the steps I followed last time that will help you to learn how to fix water tap leakage:

  • First, I turned off the water supply by a valve under the sink, but my tap doesn’t have one,so I had to turn off the main water supply.

  • I then closed the drain with a cloth to avoid losing any small parts down the sink. Next, I used a screwdriver to remove the tap handle. With the handle off, I could see the cartridge inside.

  • Using an adjustable wrench, I carefully unscrewed the cartridge in a counter-clockwise direction. This is where I found the issue, the O-ring and washer were worn out. So I replaced them with new ones I had bought earlier.

  • Before putting everything back together, I wrapped a bit of plumber’s tape around the threaded parts. Then, I reassembled the tap, making sure not to overtighten anything, as that can cause more damage.

  • Once everything was back in place, I slowly turned the water supply on and checked for leaks. Thankfully, everything was dry, and the tap worked perfectly without any drips!

Now, every time I use that tap, I feel a little proud knowing I fixed it myself. I hope my answer will help you get through how to repair leaking water tap if you’ve got a similar problem, don’t worry and just take it step-by-step.

How to solve the leakage problem?

The constant dripping of water is really annoying. Once, I ignored this issue and believed it would eventually stop, but after three to four hours, I saw that our water tank had almost run empty. I was desperate to know how to stop water from broken tap. I looked for several ways and found out that the valve issue in them caused it. Let me share here how can you stop the water leakage in such a case.

How to Stop Water Flow from Broken Tap?

To stop water flow from a broken tap, find the reason behind it first. Sometimes a broken or loose ring causes the water to flow through the tap; sometimes the damaged or worn-out cartridges lead to it. So at first, try to locate the problem. But to stop the water leakage:

  • You will need to turn off the main water supply valve.

  • Next, look for the local shut-off valve, usually beneath or near the sink.

  • I would suggest you turn the local shut-off valve clockwise until tightly closed.

  • If no local valve exists, use the main shut-off valve for the entire property.

  • Once this is done, look at the fixtures and change it if needed

  • Turn on the main water supply again and check whether it is working or not

This is just a basic suggestion on how to stop water tap leakage. In our case, we checked that the washer on the tap needed to be changed. But if you feel it is a tough task, seek a plumber’s aid.
