Hi buddy. Dealing with dampness in internal walls, especially in a climate like India’s, requires a systematic approach. I recently found dampness in my kid’s study room wall. So, I called our local painter to get it fixed but he was not in the town. However, he informed me about how to treat dampness in walls.. Read below for more details.

How to Treat Damp on Internal Walls?

The painter asked me to follow the below steps:

  • Start by identifying the source of the dampness. It could be due to leaking pipes, poor ventilation, or rising damp from the foundation. I inspect the walls for visible signs of moisture, mold, or peeling paint.

  • After pinpointing the source, he said to address it directly. For leaks, he asked to repair any damaged pipes or plumbing issues. If the problem is poor ventilation, improve airflow by installing or repairing exhaust fans and ensuring windows and vents are unobstructed.

  • After fixing the underlying issues, I focus on treating the dampness in the walls. I clean the affected areas thoroughly to remove any mold or mildew, using a mixture of water and vinegar or a commercial mold cleaner.

  • Next, as he said, I allow the wall to dry completely, which might involve using a dehumidifier or fan to speed up the process.

  • Once the wall is dry, I apply a waterproof primer to create a barrier against moisture.

  • After the primer dries, I repaint the wall with high-quality, moisture-resistant paint.

I hope this helps you understand how to stop damp coming through a wall.

Hey Sweta. Walls with damp patches can be more annoying as they can lead to the growth of mould in addition to being unappealing. I faced the same issues a few months ago and hence researched how to repair a damp internal wall. Scroll down to get several effective methods.

How to Remove Damp from Internal Walls?

Due to the humid climate and poor ventilation, dampness in interior walls is a very common issue in many Indian homes. I came across the following ways to deal with internal wall dampness:

  • Fix the Cracks in Your Wall

With time, the walls in your house could crack. These cracks typically start to appear along the window and door frames. They let moisture permeate the structure of your building, causing seepages.

Therefore, one of the best ways to prevent water from leaking through walls is to fill in cracks with wall crack filler.

  • Damp Proof Course

To stop rising moisture in your internal walls, you can use a damp proof course.

  • Waterproof Surface Treatments

You can also use metallic soaps that resist water, such as calcium and aluminum oleates and stearates. It can be used to block the pores on damp surfaces. Moreover, waterproofing the roof is one way to address internal wall moisture problems.

  • Integral Damp Proofing

Occasionally, you may detect damp patches everywhere around the lower portion of your walls. At this point, you may be thinking about how to treat penetrating damp walls internally.

To solve this issue, you can cover the damaged area with a concrete and waterproofing compound mixture.

  • Pressure Grouting

It is the process of filling cracks, fissures, and crevices in a structure using a jet-mixed mixture of cement and sand. In addition to preventing moist spots on walls, grouting can be utilised to reinforce and stiffen a building.

  • Guniting

The technique of guniting involves applying a thin layer of concrete mixture to walls and pipes to make them watertight.

I hope this helps you understand how to repair a damp internal wall.

How to treat damp walls internally in India?

  •  Water can seep through walls due to underlying cracks in the building. You should identify the cracks and re-plaster the damp area. Use waterproof paint on the exterior walls.

  • When there are damp patches on internal walls remove them by pulling out all the loose plasters. You can replaster the internal wall using cement mortar mixed with waterproof components. Before replastering, identify why the place is damp and try to fix it. I had a bathroom opposite the room which was damp. My plumber showed how one of the pipes broke which caused dampness. I fixed it immediately and my problem was solved.

  • Regrout the tile joints of both kitchen and bathroom if you notice any dampness there.

  • Use silicone sealants for windows and door frames.

I hope you understand the process for damp wall treatment.
