There was a time I was searching for how to varnish window sills. I recently had to do the activity, and I must say, it was a big task and required my efforts, but so worth it in the end. I made a note of how to do it step by step and ensured perfection.
What is the Process of Varnishing Window Sills?
If you’re thinking about doing it yourself, here’s how I went about it, and it made a huge difference:
First, I removed the old varnish using a carbide scraper. I think it’s important to always scrape in the direction of the wood grain, so I don’t damage the wood.
Then, I sanded the surface with three different sandpapers: I started with an 80 grit, moved to 120, and finished with 180 to make the surface super smooth and ready for varnishing.
Since my sills had black stains, I also treated them. I used a wood cleaner and scrubbed the stains away with a stiff brush. Afterward, I wiped everything down with white spirits to clean dust.
Next came the first coat of varnish. I used Dulux Sadolin Synthetic Clear Varnish because it’s great at sealing the wood against the elements.
After it dried, I noticed some fine hairs on the surface, so I gave it a light sanding with 240 grit paper before cleaning again with white spirits.
Finally, I applied two topcoats of Dulux Sadolin Wood Stains, and let each coat dry for about a day in between.
The result was amazing. The sills now look brand new, and the wood has that rich, polished look again. I hope my answer gave you the motivation to give a rich look to your sills too.
