These simple steps will help you plan ahead and ensure that your plants don't suffer while you're gone. Read on to know how to water plants when not at home.
- Try the classic water-wicking method.
For this, you'll need some cotton rope and a large water container like a vase or bucket. The majority of hardware stores sell cotton clotheslines, which are great.
Cut a length of cotton rope long enough to fit between the soil of your plant and the bottom of your water container.
Take one end of the rope and push it a few crawls underneath the outer layer of the soil, near the plant. Take care not to upset the roots.
Fill your water container with water while resting the other end of the rope in its base. Ensure the rope contacts the lower part of your holder.
In order to maintain a constant level of moisture in the soil, the cotton rope will slowly wick water into the pot.
- Make a Do-It-Yourself Drip system
Begin with a spotless and empty plastic jug. A water bottle will suffice as a small to medium container.
Near the top, drill several drainage holes into the bottle.
Water your plant as usual before you leave for vacation. After filling the plastic bottle with water, quickly flip it over and put it in the pot's first few inches of soil.
As the soil dries out, the bottle will slowly leak water.

Well-draining potted plants
Step 1:
Fill up your sink with a few inches of water.
Step 2:
Cover the sink with a towel so that the pots don't damage the sink.
Step 3:
