Are you trying  to learn how to waterproof hardwood floors? Waterproofing of hardwood floors is very important as it keeps the floor from getting damaged. I have learned about this the hard way and got my whole floor redone So, after I got it redone, I got in touch with a painter and told him that I wanted to get my floor hardwood floor waterproofed.

How to Make Hardwood Floors Waterproof?

The painter told me the process of waterproofing hardwood floors is quite easy. The main ingredient here is the waterproofing product. After wiping the floor, he got started with the work, and here’s what he did.

  • He started by removing all the furniture from the room. I also helped  him move them.

  • Next, he took out some sandpaper from his bag. When I asked him about them, he said that these are 220-grit sandpaper, but 180-grit sandpaper would also do.

  • He started sanding the whole floor, and when he was done, he asked me for my vacuum cleaner to remove all the dust and debris from the floor.

  • Finally, he applied the waterproofing product and asked me to let it dry properly for at least 24 hours if not more. In my case he said, one layer would be sufficient but I would suggest you analyse the requirement of your hardwood floor.

How to waterproof hardwood flooring?

  • Clean and Prepare the Floor:

Sand the floor with medium-grit sandpaper before waterproof engineered hardwood flooring.

Make sure the floor is completely clean by vacuuming or sweeping. Be thorough with this step because pre-cleaning is frequently the hardest part of waterproofing floors.

  • Prime the Floor:
  1. Pick a floor primer that is designed for the kind of flooring you are waterproofing.

  2. The primer should be evenly applied over the floor using a paint roller.

  3. Make sure the primer is applied in an even, smooth manner.

  4. Allow drying for a minimum of four hours or as instructed by the primer's manufacturer.

  • Tape the Walls:
  1. Use masking tape to line the wall at the top of the area where you wish to waterproof once the silicone and primer have dried.

  2. When you peel the tape away, it will serve as a guide and leave a neat waterproofing line.

  • Apply the First Coat of Waterproofing Sealer:

It is recommended to waterproof existing hardwood flooring with an oil- or water-based urethane waterproofing sealant since it keeps the wood's finish intact. Use a wool mop rather than a paint roller to apply urethane waterproofing sealant.

  • Apply a Waterproofing Membrane (Optional):
  1. Use a waterproofing membrane for sealing a foundation before installing new flooring.

  2. Smooth the membrane sheets into the room's corners and cracks, then apply a second layer of waterproofing sealer over them.

  3. Give the waterproofing membrane 24 hours to dry.

  • Apply the Second Coat of Waterproofing Sealer:
  1. Apply a second coat of waterproofing sealant once the first one has dried.

  2. Give it another 24 hours to dry.

  3. Masking tapes should now be removed.

This job is best done on a warm, dry day so that the floor has a good chance of drying quickly and evenly. I hope now you have understood how to waterproof hardwood floors. I hope this helps:)
