Hi Sawant. My patio furniture is made of wood, however due to dampness it was getting damaged. When I told my friend about it, he said why don’t I get it waterproofed. As I had no idea how to waterproof painted wood, so I hired a painter for the same. I saw the steps he performed, so listing the same below for your reference.
How to Make Painted Wood Waterproof?
My painter performed the below process to make my painted wood waterproofed easily:
First, he wore rubber gloves and combined the warm water and Trisodium phosphate (TSP) in the bucket.
After soaking the sponge in the TSP solution, he squeezed out as much water as possible.
He gave the painted wood a quick wipe-down to get rid of oil, dust and any heavy residues.
He used an oscillating sander with fine-grit #220 sandpaper to lightly sand the surface after it had dried completely, which took approximately a day.
After removing the majority of the dust with the shop vacuum and brush attachment, he used a tack cloth to wipe the painted wood.
Then, he wore safety goggles and used the brush to apply the polyurethane sealant to the painted wood surface. He left the sealer to get dry.
He used an electric sander to carefully smooth the surface with #220 grit sandpaper.
Then he made a pass with #320 grit sandpaper.
To clear the surface of the polyurethane dust, he used the vacuum and tack cloth.
Finally, realising that more coats of polyurethane sealer were essential for adherence and durability, he applied them.
This is all about how to paint wood to make it waterproof. I hope you found this helpful.
