Hello. I know how to weatherstrip windows and doors. During the winter season last year, we decided to weatherstrip windows and doors to insulate our house. We live in an area with great temperature drops and weatherstripping helped. To help you out, I am sharing the methods to weatherstrip both windows and doors in detail below.
Weatherstripping Windows
Here is the method:
Open the window and clean the outside of the stops with soapy water. Allow the stops to dry completely.
Cut foam tape to fit the top, bottom and sides of the stops.
Take off the back of each piece of foam and press it outside of the stops.
Weatherstripping Doors
Here is the process you can follow:
Measure the weatherstripping material you’d need. Have enough to completely seal around your door without gaps.
Then, cut the weatherstripping to nearly the exact dimensions of the doorway. Measure 2 times and make notes for accuracy.
It'd be better for your strips to be a little too long than being short. You can always remove the excess.
Check the weather and do the application on a clear sunny day.
Begin at the top corner of the door opening and place the first piece of weatherstripping so it is flush against the door frame.
Peel off the adhesive backing about 1 foot at a time and press it into place as you go.
Line up every piece to ensure no gaps are left. Open and close the door to ensure it doesn’t catch on the weatherstripping.
Adjust the door weatherstripping if needed. Use tacks or staples to reinforce the adhesive. Don’t use the door for at least 1 hour.
Add a door sweep to finish.
