The intrastate meaning in GST

refers to transactions or supplies of goods or services that involve movement of goods or services from one state to another.

What is Interstate Meaning in GST?

Here's what it means:

  • Inter-State Supply of Goods

: When goods are sold or supplied from one state to another state, it constitutes an inter-state supply. For example, if a manufacturer in Maharashtra sells goods to a distributor in Gujarat, it is considered an inter-state supply.

  • Inter-State Supply of Services

: Similarly, when services are provided from one state to a recipient in another state, it is termed as an inter-state supply of services. For instance, if a consulting firm based in Karnataka provides services to a client located in Tamil Nadu, it constitutes an inter-state supply of services.

  • Import of Goods or Services

: Transactions involving the import of goods or services into India from a territory outside India are also considered inter-state transactions.

  • Taxation in Inter-State Transactions

: In inter-state transactions, Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) is levied.

IGST is a combination of Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) and State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) or Union Territory Goods and Services Tax (UTGST), depending on the nature of the transaction.

  • Registration Requirement

: Businesses engaged in inter-state supplies of goods or services are required to obtain GST registration, irrespective of their turnover threshold, as per the GST laws.

They need to apply for a GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) for each state where they conduct inter-state transactions.

  • Compliance and Filing

: Businesses involved in inter-state transactions need to comply with GST rules and regulations, including filing of GST returns such as GSTR-1 (for outward supplies), GSTR-3B (summary return), and GSTR-2A (auto-populated inward supplies).

They also need to undertake a GST audit and maintain proper records as per the GST laws.
