Last year, I decided to use chalk paint to give my old dresser an upgrade. I had heard amazing things about how beautiful the matte finish looked and how simple it was to use. I couldn't wait to give it a try and see the change for myself. After doing some research online, I found out that a lot of people were worried about is chalk paint waterproof or not. Considering that my dresser will be in my bathroom, I wanted to make sure that it would be safe from water and moisture.
Is Chalk Paint Water Resistant?
I figured out that while chalk paint by itself is not waterproof, using a wax sealant can make it much more resistant to moisture.
I saw in a YouTube video that you should coat the chalk paint with a transparent wax coating after painting. The paint would then be protected by the wax.
I carefully followed the directions, rubbing it out with a delicate cloth after applying thin, consistent layers of wax.
The wax needed a few days to set, so I moved the dresser into my bathroom. Though I was a little concerned about how it would survive in the wet and humid conditions, I had faith that the wax sealant would work.
I've been really happy with the durability of my chalk-painted bathroom dresser for the past year. The paint has held up well even after I used a wet cloth to clean it up. The wax sealant has also stopped any discolouration or water damage from happening. If you're considering using chalk paint for a project, I would definitely recommend sealing it with a protective topcoat for added durability and water resistance.
