A number of the regulations governing withdrawals from the Provident Fund (PF) account have been updated by the Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) for 2022. These changes are aimed to make PF withdrawal simpler for you. It will help you if you are struggling financially. Please read carefully if PF partial withdrawal is taxable or not.

Does the partial withdrawal of PF is taxable or not?

When you take money out of your PF account, you may be eligible for tax benefits. But only if you withdraw PF after 5 years of regular service. Additionally, it depends on what tax bracket you are in. If you take your PF balance before the completion of the five-year term, the tax will be applied to your money as either tax deducted at source (TDS) or tax. This tells you if partial withdrawal is partial withdrawal of PF taxable.

When the partial withdrawal of PF is allowed?

In some cases, EPF withdrawals made before five years may not be subject to tax. The following are some of the examples:

  • If you submit a PAN, a 10% TDS will be applied when you withdraw your PF balance using Form 15G or Form 15H.

  • If you move your PF balance from one PF account to another

  • After the employer's company is no longer active

  • When you have an unpredicted medical emergency or health condition and you have to withdraw money.

  • When the total of your PF is less than Rs.50,000.

What are the important guidelines for EPF withdrawal:

  • Emergency expenses including medical emergencies, home purchases or construction, and university education are all eligible for partial withdrawals from EPF accounts. 

  • There are restrictions on partial withdrawal based on the reason. You as an account owner can submit a request for a partial withdrawal online.

  • Early retirement is not taken into account until the person is 55 years old, despite the fact that the EPF corpus can only be withdrawn after retirement. 

  • If the person is at least 54 years old, EPFO permits the withdrawal of 90% of the EPF corpus one year before retirement.
