I made the decision to use spray paint to give some old garden furniture a new life a few months ago. I was excited to try it because I had seen so many amazing transformations online on YouTube. Hence, I researched, is spray paint waterproof. I found that not all spray paints are water resistant, as some are meant for outdoor usage, others are made for inside use.
Is Spray Paint Water Resistant?
As I mentioned above, not all the spray paint you get will be water resistant. Because of their water-repellent qualities, spray paints are insoluble in water. When acrylic spray paint dries completely, it leaves a layer on the surfaces that repels water. But I found out you should be aware that after they dry, acrylic spray paints are not waterproof. Thus, if at all possible, avoid using them in the rain. Moreover, applying a varnish or sealer might enhance the water-based spray paints' waterproof qualities.
I went with a spray paint that was specifically marked as "weather-resistant" just to be safe. Till now, it prevented the paint on my furniture from peeling off during rain. Let me also share you the process I followed to apply this paint:
I first cleaned my furniture's surfaces.
Then, I lightly sanded them and followed by applying the spray paint in even coats. I enjoyed watching the colour come to life during the process.
To make sure everything was fully set, I let everything dry for a whole day after I completed painting.
A week later, there was a sudden rain. I was worried about the durability of my recently painted furniture. Then, when it stopped raining, I stepped outside just to be sure that the rain didn’t ruin my paint. But it looked fantastic, which relieved me.
