I was not much aware of the activities allowed in residential areas until my aunt and mother were discussing it. I thought anyone can do anything they want but no. The housing society management sets up a list of commercial activities allowed in residential areas so that people abide by it and no disturbance is caused to others. I think it is great actually. However do note that anyone who wants to run a business or shop must have a licence under the Shop Establishment Act enacted by your state. One can go for having:

• Pharmacy or Medical Store

• Laundry and Dry Cleaning

• Barber Shop

• Baby Diapers Shop

• Electric Store

• Hardware store and many more

As far as I know rules are mostly the same in every place and in the case of Mumbai I know that an area of 220 sq ft can be used for commercial activities for running any office since my cousin has a grocery shop in one of the residential areas there.
