I was reading the newspaper and read that the High Court has made it mandatory for all high-rise buildings, measuring 15 metres and above, to have a fire licence. The licence needs to be renewed by the relevant authority every two years. I will share with you fire safety rules for residential buildings in Mumbai as per Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006.

What are fire safety rules for high-rise buildings in India ?

  • Fire Extinguishers should be kept on each floor in prominent places throughout the floor.

  • The chief fire officer should arrange for a Hose reel, Wet Riser, Down comer, Sprinkler systems, courtyard hydrant, and Smoke and Fire Alarm System (manual or automatic) should be arranged. 

  • Sand buckets should be installed at prominent places around the building, including the playground, garage, and garden area. 

  • Mock fire drills should be conducted by the nearest fire station.
