Last Diwali, I hired a painter from NoBroker to paint the internal wall of my house after reading good testimonials. During the on-site visit, the painter advised priming the wall, so I asked him regarding the different types of paint primer. He said there are multiple paint primer options including Rust-Inhibiting, Latex-Based, Oil-Based, Shellac and so on.
What are the Different Kinds of Primer?
Primers are essential to the painting process, as you undoubtedly know, but why is that? When I asked the painter about it, he said primers can give the topcoat a solid foundation to adhere to.
He also told me that shellac, latex, and oil-based primers are some of the most widely used types. Since Daya Barall has previously discussed them, I'll list several other primers that my painter informed me about. Those are as follows:
Stain-Blocking Primer
He said for painting both the interior and exterior wall, this is one of the most widely used primer types. This primer usually obstructs the resin seeping out of the walls. In addition, it also masks watermarks, stains from cooking, and other flaws in the surface. It offers good durability and adhesiveness.
Rust-Inhibiting Primer
Further he said this primer stops abrasions and corrosion from causing the surfaces to corrode. The common ingredients in these primers are zinc or zinc phosphate. As you must know, these substances create a barrier that prevents rusting on metal surfaces.
Mold-Resistant Primer
Last but not least, this primer includes biocides or active substances. As a result, it ensures that the surface is adequately equipped to withstand fungal deterioration and moisture damage. The painter said that these water-based products are recommended for surfaces that are exposed to moisture and humidity, such as kitchen walls, ceilings, and bathrooms.
In the end, I decided to use mold-resistant primer since it provided a level, flat surface for paint adhesion. I hope you get an idea of the different types of paint primer.

A few months back, I tried to paint my house but didn't know which primer to purchase. I called my uncle and asked him about the paint primer types. He told me that there are different types of paint primer, and they should be chosen depending on the surface. Here are the types he mentioned.
What are the Different Types of Wall Primer?
Some of the primers that my uncle mentioned have already been listed above by Daya. Here are the rest.
Bonding Primer
He told me that if I am looking to paint over challenging surfaces such as glossy or slick surfaces, bonding primer is the best choice. According to him, Bonding primers are the best types of primer paint for walls. They are made to provide maximum adhesion on surfaces that are difficult to paint such as ceramic tiles, glass, and metal.
Tinted Primer
Another primer paint types that he mentioned was Tinted primers. These primers are an excellent voice for people who want to achieve a consistent colour with only a few coats. They are very useful when transitioning from dark to light paint colours or when covering up existing strong colours.
Multi-Surface Primer
He told me that multi-surface primers should be used when painting on different surfaces such as drywall, wood, etc. According to him, these primers are designed to provide adhesion on different surfaces to make sure that the paint is uniformly distributed.
And that's all he told me about paint primer types. I hope this helps.

I wanted to get my house painted and was looking for a painting service provider. I called a friend who suggested me a good painter. On the call, the painter told me about the supplies that he needed. He also told me to get a certain primer as there are different paint primer types.
Which are The Different Kinds of Primer?
Upon arriving, he checked the supplies and told me that the primer that I got wasn’t the one he told me about. Following that, he proceeded to explain the different types of paint primer.
- Oil Based Primer
He explained that Oil Based primers are the best and a popular choice for painters. These primers are very versatile as they can be applied on various surfaces and even on walls with a previous coat of paint.
- Latex Based Primer
According to him, Latex-based primers are one of the best types of primer for walls. These can be used to prepare drywall before applying paint. These primers are effective because they can even out surfaces and make them uniform for paint application.
- Shellac Primer
He said that when it comes to wooden surfaces, Shellac primer is the best choice. He also said that this primer is mostly used for hiding water damage and smoke damage on the walls and preparing them for a new coat of paint.
And this is what he told me about the different paint primer types. I hope this has been of help to you.
