I have been living in a Municipal Corporation for 5 years. A municipal corporation, also known as a city corporation, Mahanagar Palika, Mahanagar Nigam, is an Indian local administration that governs cities with populations of more than one million people. The growing population in Indian cities necessitated the establishment of a local governing body to collect property taxes from the state government in order to provide essential community services such as health care, education, housing, and transportation. Let’s see Municipal Corporation functions.

It plays an important role in preserving the health and growth of the community it serves. Moreover, offering fundamental services like waste disposal, water supply, and sanitation is one of its main responsibilities. Read on to find out more responsibilities of municipality.

What are the main functions of municipal corporation?

Shrishti, Memon Saquib, and Ajitesh have already mentioned the multiple functions of municipal cooperation. Let’s find out the major functionality of municipality below:

  • Legislative Power:

The legislative branch of the local government is made up of municipal corporators, who decide on resolutions, bylaws, and public policy. In council meetings, they have the majority voice, and the Chairman cast the vote if there is a tie.

  • Executive Power:

Municipal Corporators have significant executive power in some Indian states, and they can use this power to nominate people to various committees.

  • Administrative Power:

Legislation gives municipal corporators the authority to regulate public health, sanitation, public works, markets, deaths, and marriages as well as to guarantee the cleanliness of public spaces.

  • Financial Power:

Corporators are in charge of accepting the yearly financial proposal and levying fees, penalties, and taxes to raise money.

A municipal corporation performs a wide range of essential duties for the growth and administration of a city or town. I hope you got an idea of what is the role of municipal corporation.

Every local municipal issue falls within the purview of the Municipal Corporation, whose policies are set forth in the 74th Amendment Act of the Indian Constitution of 1992. According to the Constitution's Twelfth Schedule, the work of municipal corporation are as follows:

  • Regulation of building and other property construction as well as land use.

  • The creation of programmes for social fairness and economic prosperity.

  • Having the right to impose, collect, and use these taxes, charges, tolls, and fees in the proper manner.

  • Water supply for residential, commercial, and industrial uses.

  • Solid waste management, sanitation conservation, and public health.

  • Assisting with emergency assistance and fire services.

  • Urban forestry, environmental preservation, and ecological awareness.
