Hi Rishi. We recently got doen with the redesign of our kitchen. We are flipping the old one to modular kind and followed the kitchen design rules. So, I will be the right person to share some points from my experience. Ms Shifa has already stated some vital points, but I’ll add a few missing ones. 

Rules for Kitchen Design?

Here are some essential rules to follow while designing your kitchen:

1. Colour: This is an important thing. Colours should’t be cluttered, but coherent with your design and feel. You can go for vibrant colours with not more than 2-3 or go classy with subtle and muted tones. 

2. Lighting; Focus on making your lighting functional. The two main areas of work in a kitchen are the countertop and the sink. So have overhead lighting for these two spaces.

3. Balancing Elements: If your kitchen layout allows, divide the space into two equal regions and use symmetry to add balance.

4. Proportion: When you bring in accessories for the kitchen, consider their size compared to the kitchen to keep things proportionate. Having too large items may disrupt the balance of the space.

Hey there. I am an interior designer by profession and saw you were wondering about the basic kitchen design rules. So, I can help you by sharing a detailed list of rules which will make it easier for you to design your kitchen.

What are Kitchen Interior Design Rules?

• To begin with, you should see how you are going to use the space and what are the priorities. Different kitchen layouts such as U-shaped, L-shaped, island, one wall and gallery offer different benefits. You can go for an open kitchen to increase interaction or go with a closed one to make a separate space.

• You can then assign zones to the kitchen with each zone containing specific functions like food preparation, cooking storage, cleaning, etc. This will help in organisation of the kitchen effectively.

• Use the work triangle which connects the three most important areas of the kitchen, the cooktop, refrigerator and sink. The space between these three areas should be obstruction free and the distance must be between 4 to 9 feet.

• You should then focus on the spaces for power outlets and electrical appliances. You should place them in a way such that the movement is not restricted while you have sufficient space to store everything.

• Go for modular kitchen accessories such as pull out baskets, cutlery organisers and corner storage units for L and U shaped kitchens.

• Use layered lighting apart from your basic lighting which includes ceiling and pendant lights. Use small lights for focus work above the cooktop, under the cabinet and above the sink.

• Look for having a good ventilation system through window openings, chimneys and an exhaust fan. 

• Choose durability in the materials you use like quartz and granite for the countertops. Go for boiling water-resistant plywood instead of MDF for cabinets and SS finish hardware that is rust resistant.

• Have drawers of different sizes to store different sized items efficiently. If you have a small kitchen, use vertical drawers with cabinets from floor to ceiling. 

• Use a single cabinet or space to place your appliances as they take up a lot of space and this way, you’ll be able to organise and save space.
