When I was trying to figure out which chemical is used to clean chimneys, I wanted something that would easily cut through the grease and grime. After some research and speaking to the professionals who cleaned my kitchen chimney, they suggested using specific degreasing products like Mr. Muscle Kitchen Cleaner or Colin Grease Cleaner. These work really well for breaking down the sticky buildup caused by cooking.

What Chemical Used to Clean Chimney?

  • The professional cleaner sprayed Mr. Muscle onto the filters and the inner walls of the chimney, especially where the grease collects.

  • After letting it sit for about 10 to 15 minutes, they scrubbed it with a soft sponge.

  • Once they wiped everything down, the filters were sparkling clean.

The whole thing took less than 30 minutes, and it made a noticeable difference—the chimney wasn’t just clean but also working more efficiently.

What I liked most was that both Mr. Muscle and Colin are safe for home use, easily available, and don’t leave a strong chemical smell behind. I hope you get an idea of the chemical used to clean kitchen chimney.

My mother was very angry to see our dirty chimney and asked me to buy the chemical for cleaning kitchen chimney. Now there are two types of chemicals you can buy for chimney cleaning purposes: Sodium Hydroxide or Nitric Acid. You can buy any one of them and clean your chimney with it.

Since Caustic Soda or Sodium Hydroxide is easily available in the market, I usually buy it. Here is the chimney cleaning process using caustic soda.

Which Chemical for Chimney Cleaning is the Best?

My mother believes Sodium Hydroxide mixed with water is the best solution or chemical to clean the kitchen chimney. Here is how you can use it:

  • Mix a little amount of Sodium Hydroxide with water to create a strong alkaline solution.

  • Spray the solution all over your chimney parts

  • The chemical will react with the residues of the chimney and break them down into water-soluble compounds

  • Rinse the chimney parts with water entirely

  • Wipe the parts with a dry soft cloth and your chimney is all clean now

Just make sure you use gloves and goggles as this chemical is hard and might cause harm to you.

If you want to use nitric acid, use the chemical to clean chimney following the same process I mentioned above. You can also go for any chimney cleaning solution available online or in the market.

What chemical used to clean kitchen chimney?

There are several chemicals you can use to clean the chimney. It includes washing liquid, baking soda, caustic soda, vinegar, paint thinner, warm water, etc. You must always disconnect a chimney filter from the hood before cleaning it and put on rubber gloves.

Which are the 3 chemicals used to clean the chimney?

1) Baking soda

You must add boiling water to a tub. Add 2 cups of white vinegar, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and 1/4 cup of rock salt. Dip the filter in this mixture for two to three hours. The filter needs to be fully submerged. Alternatively, you can use a stainless steel tub to boil the filters in this combination for 30 minutes. Next, wash it with plain water after scrubbing it with a non-abrasive sponge or washcloth. After cleaning, let it air dry for 30 minutes. This clears your doubt about what chemical is used to clean chimneys.

2) Washing Liquid

You should first add boiling hot water to a tub and then add a cup of liquid detergent. Place the filter within the mixture. The filter needs to be thoroughly immersed. Don't touch it for two to three hours. As an option, you might place the mixture in a stainless steel tub, submerge the filter, and then boil it for 30 minutes. After removing the filter, carefully scrub it with a nonabrasive scrub, wash it with water, and then allow it to dry.

3) Caustic Soda

Put the filter in a stainless steel tub. Then sprinkle caustic soda all over it, then leave for 10 to 15 minutes. After that, add hot water until the filter is completely submerged, and then leave it alone for one to two hours. You must then take out the filter, scrub it with a sponge, and properly wash it with water. Then dry it off by wiping it.
