It is true that calcium hypochlorite is the most preferred chemical used to clean water tank but there are more you can opt for. I have hired several cleaners to get our tank cleaned so I am well aware of the chemicals they use. Since you asked, let me share a few of the chemical names here.

What are Some Drinking Water Tank Cleaning Chemicals?

During COVID-19, we were not able to clean our water tank for a long time and it got really dirty. When we hired a cleaner, he used the chemical trisodium phosphate (TSP) to clean the tank. He shared that TSP is effective in degreasing and cleaning tank surfaces. It also helps to maintain water purity and prevent contamination. It is usually applied at a rate of 1 cup for every five gallons of the tank’s water-holding capacity until the tank is full. Other chemicals that can be used are:

Chlorine Dioxide:

Chlorine Dioxide acts as a powerful disinfectant, effectively killing bacteria, algae, and other harmful organisms present in water tanks and ensuring safe drinking water.

Citric Acid:

Citric acid is used for removing scale deposits and stains. This chemical also ensures the cleanliness and hygiene of water storage tanks.

However, do not use these chemicals yourself to clean the tank. Using the right proportion is very important and if you use excessive amounts, your water can get poisonous and affect your health severely.

So these are some water tank cleaning chemical names I can remember as of now. If you use some other chemical, do share its name here.

I was not sure about which chemical for cleaning water tank our cleaner used so I decided to ask him about it. I wanted to be sure that it was not harmful and I believe you must be aware of such things too. Several chemicals can be used for this tank cleaning purpose but cleaners usually use

calcium hypochlorite

. Let me share some other chemicals for tank cleaning here.

What is the Water Tank Cleaning Chemical Name?

Bleaching powder or Calcium Hypochlorite is commonly used as a disinfectant to kill bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms present in the water tank. However, there are many other chemicals used for water tank cleaning purposes and they are:

Hydrochloric Acid:

Hydrochloric acid is another chemical used to dissolve mineral deposits, specifically calcium carbonate, in the walls of water tanks. Its acidic nature enables effective descaling, ensuring the removal of stubborn residues and enhancing water quality.

Alum (Aluminium Sulfate):

Alum, or aluminium sulphate, helps in water treatment by promoting coagulation. it causes suspended particles and impurities to clump together. The alum facilitates their removal during filtration processes, thereby improving water clarity and purity.

Sodium Hypochlorite:

Sodium hypochlorite is a commonly employed disinfectant used in sanitising water tanks and treating water for consumption. It has powerful oxidising properties that effectively neutralise bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microorganisms. This ensures the safety and cleanliness of stored water.

These are some of the most common water tank cleaning chemicals in India. You can use chemicals to make your tank clean but make sure not to use excessive amounts.

You can use several drinking water tank cleaning chemicals that are safe for the water system. The most common of them is high-strength calcium hypochlorite (HSCH). When mixed with water, it liberates 60 to 80% of its volume as chlorine. But this is not the only chemical for water tank cleaning. There are many more.

Which chemical is used to clean water tank?

The list of chemicals that you can use to clean the tank is:

  • Chlorine (Sodium Hypochlorite):

Chlorine is a widely used disinfectant for water tanks. It effectively kills bacteria, viruses, and algae. It can be used in various forms, such as liquid bleach or chlorine tablets.

  • Hydrogen Peroxide:

Hydrogen peroxide is another disinfectant option. It is less corrosive than chlorine and doesn't leave a strong odour or taste in the water.

  • Potassium Permanganate:

Potassium permanganate is used for oxidising and removing iron, manganese, and other impurities from the water. It can also help control algae growth.

  • Citric Acid:

Citric acid is used for descaling and removing mineral deposits from tank surfaces. It is a safe, biodegradable option for cleaning.

  • Acetic Acid (Vinegar):

Vinegar is used to remove calcium and mineral deposits from tank surfaces. It is a mild acid and poses no health risks when properly diluted and rinsed.

  • Polyphosphate:

Polyphosphate is often used to inhibit the formation of scale and corrosion in water tanks and pipes.

  • Activated Carbon:

Activated carbon can be used to remove odours and improve the taste of water. It's often used in combination with other chemicals or filtration systems.

So choose any of the safe chemicals and get your water treated.

It is so important to know the water tank cleaning chemicals name while cleaning a water tank. It takes more than a few mops and wipes to properly clean a water tank, which is not a simple task. Firstly, as we are all aware, huge quantities of water are stored in water tanks before being used to supply large-scale buildings. But after a certain amount of time, contaminants like dust, dirt, debris, mould, rust, sludge, and not to mention the infamous Legionella, a deadly bacteria that thrives in water tanks, and can infect water tanks.

Chlorine is a powerful and inexpensive chemical that can be used to disinfect water storage tanks. Apply a "shock chlorination" with 50 to 100 parts per million (PPM) and let it sit for 12 to 24 hours if your tank is new, has recently been serviced, or you know it is contaminated.

The chlorine levels will start to decrease after you add the chlorine. Depending on the chlorine demand (the chemistry and conditions of your water) and the water's temperature, chlorine is depleted and broken down.

If the chlorine levels are 10 PPM or below, repeat the process. Otherwise, test the chlorine residual after 24 hours. Use a maintenance residual of 1 to 2 PPM if you are storing water and wish to maintain a chlorine residual for safety.

It is considered that Chlorine as a water tank cleaning chemical is regarded as safe in drinking water, however, the concentrations should be up to 4 mg/L (or 4 ppm) by the CDC, World Health Organization, and other health organisations. At this concentration, negative health impacts are unlikely to happen.
