Firstly, as we are all aware, huge quantities of water are stored in water tanks before being used to supply large-scale buildings. But after a certain amount of time, contaminants like dust, dirt, debris, mould, rust, sludge, and not to mention the infamous Legionella, a deadly bacteria that thrives in water tanks, and can infect water tanks.

Chlorine is a powerful and inexpensive chemical that can be used to disinfect water storage tanks. Apply a "shock chlorination" with 50 to 100 parts per million (PPM) and let it sit for 12 to 24 hours if your tank is new, has recently been serviced, or you know it is contaminated.

The chlorine levels will start to decrease after you add the chlorine. Depending on the chlorine demand (the chemistry and conditions of your water) and the water's temperature, chlorine is depleted and broken down.

If the chlorine levels are 10 PPM or below, repeat the process. Otherwise, test the chlorine residual after 24 hours. Use a maintenance residual of 1 to 2 PPM if you are storing water and wish to maintain a chlorine residual for safety.

It is considered that Chlorine as a water tank cleaning chemical is regarded as safe in drinking water, however, the concentrations should be up to 4 mg/L (or 4 ppm) by the CDC, World Health Organization, and other health organisations. At this concentration, negative health impacts are unlikely to happen.
