Wondering about what documents required for NRI account? Opening an NRI (Non-Resident Indian) account in India requires specific documentation to comply with regulatory requirements and to facilitate seamless banking transactions. Some of them includes identity proof, address proof, photograph and so on.

What are the Documents Required for NRI Account?

Here’s a detailed overview of the documents typically required to open an NRI account:

Identity Proof:

  • Passport: A valid passport with pages showing personal details, visa, and immigration stamps.

  • OCI/PIO Card: If applicable, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) or Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card can serve as an identity proof.

Address Proof:

  • Overseas Address Proof: Utility bills (electricity, water, gas), bank statements, or government-issued documents showing the NRI’s overseas address.

  • Permanent Address Proof: Proof of address in India such as Aadhaar card, voter ID card, or utility bills.

Photographs: Recent passport-size photographs of the NRI account holder(s).

PAN Card: Permanent Account Number (PAN) card issued by the Income Tax Department of India. PAN is mandatory for financial transactions and tax purposes.

KYC (Know Your Customer) Documents: Compliance with KYC norms requires submission of documents such as Form A2 (for remittances), FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) declaration form, and others as required by the bank.

Income Proof: Depending on the bank’s policies, NRIs may need to provide income proof such as salary slips, tax returns, or bank statements from the country of residence.

Signature Proof: Specimen signatures duly attested may be required for verification purposes.

Different banks may have specific additional requirements or variations in documentation based on their internal policies and regulatory compliance. Some banks may require NRIs to complete in-person verification (IPV) through video call or in a designated branch.

It’s advisable to contact the chosen bank or financial institution to understand their specific documentation requirements and procedures to avoid any delays or complications during the account opening process.

My brother was a non-resident Indian who was working abroad. In order to invest in Indian markets, he planned to create an NRI savings account in HDFC India. He then asked me if I was aware of the list of documents needed for NRI account. I did some online research and discovered that he needs to provide

a valid work permit or visa, a passport, proof of permanent address, a pay slip, and other documents.

If you are also an NRI and looking to obtain a detailed list of documents, carefully read this answer.

List of Documents Needed to Open NRI Account in India

Check out the documents needed to start an NRI account in HDFC, just like with any savings account below:

ID Proof

A copy of your current passport, and your Permanent Account Number (PAN). If you don't have PAN then, you have to submit Form 60.

NRI Status Proof

A copy of a current work permit, visa, or Overseas Resident Card

Proof of Address

You must make sure that the address listed on the application form and the address on the document must match.

Photograph

You must have 2 to 3 recent photographs.

Initial Payment Proof

A draft or cheque for the initial payment must be made from your own account.

I further found during my research that every photocopy of the aforementioned proofs needs to attested with any of the following:

  • Authorised representatives of Scheduled Commercial Banks with registered offices abroad in India,

  • Overseas bank branches that Indian banks have connections with,

  • Notary public overseas,

  • Judge,

  • Court magistrate,

  • Indian Embassy or General Consulate in the nation where a non-resident client lives.

I informed all the documents for opening NRI account online to my brother. He finally submitted the necessary documentation and his NRI account got opened and now it’s available for transactions.

I hope now you got an idea of the list of documents to open NRI account.
