Hi Guys. On a mini split system, DF denotes "Defrost Mode". Last summer, even my air conditioner showed a "DF" code. As I wasn’t aware of it, I researched, what does DF mean in air conditioner? I found the unit has started a defrost cycle, which is a standard procedure to guarantee the system runs smoothly. During the Defrost function, the steam is created on the outside unit.

What does DF Mean on Air Conditioner?

As Mahi Jha mentioned, to avoid frost accumulation on the outside unit, particularly in colder climates, your micro split system has switched to defrost mode or you can call it the DF code.

• The interior unit stops blowing heated air during this process as the system momentarily changes to cooling mode. Rather, it either stops completely or blasts cold air. 

• The melting of the frost may also cause the outside unit to emit water droplets or steam.

How to Fix DF in AC?

During my research, I found a solution to fix it. It was to try lowering the temperature to relieve the outdoor unit's pressure if this code persisted over 10 minutes. However, an AC Technician is required to check for leaks and top up the gas if this code persists. It is because it shows that the system is low on refrigerant.

Common Error Codes in Mini Splits

To show particular faults, mini splits may display a variety of error codes. Besides DF, some typical error codes are:

• E1: Refrigerant leak or low pressure

• E2: High refrigerant pressure

• E4: Outdoor coil temperature sensor malfunction
