As kids we used to draw sliding roofs and even now, children draw houses like it. I have seen such roofs in other countries but in India, you won’t see it and if seen also, they are for some decorative purpose only. I loved the structure of houses that have a gable roof and thus would like to share with you as well about what is a gable roof design and why the houses opt for it.

Gable roof meaning

Gable roof has been named after its prominent gables, the triangular upper part of a wall at the end of a ridge roof. Such a roof has two sections whose upper horizontal edges meet to form its ridge. It is most commonly seen in cold countries.

Importance of gable end roof

Steeper slopes are always good. Some important points for ot are:

  • A gable roof helps to shed water or snow easily and there is no scope of stagnation of water or snow.

  • During winters in cold countries the roof gets covered and it becomes hard to remove them but if the slope is steep, the snow will fall automatically and one need not do anything.

  • Same for countries where there is very much rainfall. The rainwater will slip down easily through the slopes and that is why such slopes are very important in those countries.

I have seen that wooden houses generally have gable roofs and that is why in India, you won’t see them.

These are some of the important aspects of gable roof design.
