What Is A Homestead?

During covid we had online classes and I felt too bored when they were over. We were restricted from going out of our houses until it is absolutely necessary hence avoided going to someone’s house as well. I started planting trees and loved my new hobby. Once my aunt visited our house after a few months and saw me collecting tomatoes from my terrace garden and jokingly said, “so now you have become a homesteader?” I did not know what it meant and asked “what is a homestead?” and she explained everything to me that I am going to tell you as well.

Homestead refers to a farmhouse and also the land surrounding it. To define homestead in simple words is, it is a land upon which an individual can rely to be self-sufficient. Back in the days, people used to cultivate their own food, did craftwork or even had textile production so that they need not depend on others and that is called homesteading. After knowing these things, I have understood why my aunt said so. 

I asked my aunt in details about can I start an urban homestead and she asked me to focus on few things like:

• Start gardening and plant several types of plants

• Begin composting

• Should now how to preserve food

• Do things as much as I can on my own without anyone’s help

• Learn new tactics and skills to get better at gardening

I am glad that I never give up and in the previous year during winter I was able to cultivate several vegetables which tasted way better than vegetables available in the market.
