Land grants are nothing but a gift from the government to an individual. I learnt about this concept when my family was trying to buy a property which later came out to be grant land and hence got cancelled. Let me share here what is meant by a land grant and how to get a

  What is a land grant?

Land grant refers to a gift of real estate- land or its usage given by the government or an authority as a form of incentive, enabling work, a reward for service or more.

What are the 3 types of land grants?

The main concept or aim behind land grants is to help a person in need or a gift of appreciation. There are no such strict types of land grants. A land grant can be made to people like

  • Ex-serviceman

  • Landless people

  • Appreciable sports persons

  • Widows and more

Government can also grant land to some institutions, schools or colleges for their betterment. In ancient days during the reign of Vakataka rulers, land grants were made to the Brahmanas so that they could carry on building temples or practise religious customs. Since then granting land has been in vogue.

The land we were checking out was granted land and allotted for the construction of some temple so we backed off. They even showed the land grant certificate Karnataka.

  Can granted land get sold?

The Karnataka Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes Act, 1978 prohibits the sale of granted land. However if the owner can acquire the permission of the government, he/she can move forward with the selling procedure.

What is a land grant?

A land grant is the gift or the appreciation reward given to the individuals like ex servicemen, landless peoples, appreciable sports persons and widows. The main intention of granting land to such people is to help them live peacefully at their own place and use it wisely when they are in need. My uncle also received a small piece of land as appreciation reward from the government for his 30 years of honest service to the nation in the armed forces. That moment was really proud and blessed for my family as it left us all in tears and made us proud of the service of our uncle to the nation.

The concept of land granting is really appreciable and helpful for the people who are really in need. But it should be granted to the people who are really in need of it to make a living out of it. I heard some incidents that made me a little bit sad, like some cold hearted peoples snatching the granted lands from the innocent peoples with their power. The Deputy Commissioner of a district may award lands up to a total area of 10 hectares, and the Divisional Commissioner can award lands up to a total area of 15 hectares for the cultivation of plantation crops. In all other circumstances, the ideas must be approved by the government.

Types of grant land in Karnataka:
