Hi buddy,

I am sure a “lintel” is not something you might have heard of before. So, what is a lintel beam? Is it a type of soup? a type of utensil? Well, it’s a very essential part of your home’s structure that not many house owners know. Let’s read about it in detail:

What is a Lintel on a House

Basically, it’s a beam placed across openings such as windows and doors in buildings for supporting the load from the structure above. As you must know, doors and windows aren’t made to be the building’s structural members. When an opening is made in a building, there’s a concentrated load above the window opening or doorway that needs to be supported. You will mostly find lintels on brick or other masonry structures.  In wood structures, there are beams that are generally referred to as headers that serve the same purpose.

Different Types of Lintels:
  • Steel lintel

  • Reinforced concrete lintel

  • Reinforced brick lintel

  • Timber lintel

  • Stone lintel

  • Brick lintel

What are You Required to Do to Maintain Your Lintels

In the case of steel lintel, it’s important to protect them from rusting through and from the environment.  Proper installation of flashing during construction is crucial, ensuring water isn’t ponding around the lintels.  When you begin noticing surface rust on your steel lintels, then you should re-coat them.  Ensure the contractor removes any existing rust before painting the lintels.

In the case of stone lintel, proper drainage is important.  You won’t have to worry about the stone rusting but if you feel the stone deteriorating that’s a sign of water intrusion and you need to consult an expert to inspect the issue.
