What is a masonry wall?

It is a wall/ part of the construction process where brick, concrete blocks, structural clay tile, and stone are used. These materials are used with a binding mortar mix of lime, sand, and gypsum. It is commonly used in high-rise buildings and large houses.

Masonry walls provide strength to any building or structure. It makes it durable while controlling indoor and outdoor temperatures. There are a few different types of masonry wall. I will share the list below:

Load Bearing Masonry Walls :

These walls are made with bricks, stones or concrete blocks. The load from the roof is directly transferred to the foundation. These walls are usually reinforced with metal bars to withstand tension.

Cavity or Hollow Walls:

These walls are constructed with cement blocks. They are needed for protecting the inside of any structure from dampness. It is used to create empty spaces between the interior and exterior walls.

Composite Walls:

These walls are made with a mix of building materials. eg stones and bricks, hollow and solid bricks. Composite walls usually have aesthetically appealing materials in the exterior area and concrete or rubble backing in the interior area.

Other types are :

  • Confined Masonry

  • Reinforced Cavity Masonry

  • Reinforced Grouted Masonry

  • Reinforced Hollow Unit Masonry

  • Reinforced Pocket-Type Walls

  • Reinforced Solid Masonry
