What is a purlin in construction?

Purlins carry roof deck or sheathing loads and they are supported by large rafters, building walls, steel beams, etc. Purlins are used in pre-engineered metal construction systems and ancient past and beam and frame construction.

Purlins carry roof loads to the major structural elements that help to support the roof. The arrangement of purlin is responsible for design which depends on the amount of load a roof can take and the limited sheeting lengths to use.

Now that we know what is purlin in steel structure, let us understand why are purlins constructed:

  • Purlins are used to take up the gravity loads, including the weight of roofing materials and proper snow loads.

  • For wind uplift loads.

  • Loads occur by laterally bracing the tops of the trusses.

One thing we must remember is that while installing the purlins it is better to hire a reputed one. Many builders will promise to deliver quality work at a decent price. But generally, we get what we pay for. So, be very careful while choosing your builders to install purlins.

I hope you know what is a purlin now.
