What is a purlin in construction?

Purlins carry roof deck or sheathing loads and they are supported by large rafters, building walls, steel beams, etc. Purlins are used in pre-engineered metal construction systems and ancient past and beam and frame construction.

Purlins carry roof loads to the major structural elements that help to support the roof. The arrangement of purlin is responsible for design which depends on the amount of load a roof can take and the limited sheeting lengths to use.
