What is a Residence Permit in India

A residence permit is required by a foreigner residing in the country for more than 180 days. It is issued following registration at the FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Officers) and is valid for a period mentioned in the holder’s visa. Currently, the FRRO is available in the major Indian cities (Bengaluru, Delhi, Amritsar, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Chennai).

All those working in India need a PAN (Permanent Account Number). This unique identifying number is issued by the Indian Income Tax Department and is necessary for all those wanting to work in India and obtain a residence permit.

Documents needed to get a residence permit in India

    Four passport photos;

  • A valid visa and a valid passport;

  • Three copies of the passport page containing the valid visa and the photo;

  • Three copies of the documents mentioning the person’s residency in India;

  • Registration fee.
