My AC's cooling cycle shortened last year compared to normal and due to that my electricity bill was coming high. I thus hired an AC technician to fix it, and he told me that the problem is known as Air Conditioner short cycling. 1. Your air filter comes first. Before turning your system back on, turn it off, remove the filter, and replace it with the one that is mentioned by the manufacturer.

2. Just take a peek at the evaporator coils, and if you see any ice, turn off the system until the coils are totally defrosted. 

3.  Swap out the big AC unit with the one that fits your house more comfortably.
