Hello, I would like to share what the area code for PAN card means. You can understand an area code as a 3 letter code that identifies the individual or a company’s geographical location. Each region is given a specific code, which is used as the area code for that region. This area code is one of the components of the AO code in PAN.

The AO code stands for Area Officer code, which is used to fill in the application form when you apply for a new PAN card. It specifies the tax jurisdiction which your PAN application would come under. Apart from this, it helps to identify the AO officers and offices in our region. These officers analyse your taxation. So, the AO code and area code are connected this way. To further help you understand everything, I am sharing the 4 components of the AO code below, which also consists of the area code.

What is Area Code for PAN Card?

As I mentioned above, area code is a 3 digit code. The regional office that issues the PAN card is identified by the area code.

The AO code comprises 4 components, including the area code, AO type, range type and the AO number. Since I have talked about the area code, let me share details about the other 3 components.

  1. The AO type helps the IT department by specifying the applicant type, whether it is an individual, a company, an NRI or a service worker.

  2. The Range type holds the purpose of identifying the ward or circle where the PAN applicant resides.

  3. Lastly, the AO number is known as the AO code’s last element, which is issued by the NSDL and denoted in numerals.

This is all I have to share regarding what area code in PAN card means.
