I have seen painters using some sort of cleaning solution (liquids with an exorbitant amount of spirit or denatured alcohol) to clean wood. However, for DIY projects, I prefer using mild detergent and water solution. It is effective and easy to use. So my answer to what is best to clean wood before painting is using water and a detergent solution. But if you want, you can opt for some other options.

What Should I Clean Wood with Before Painting?

Some cleaning solutions you can use to clean the wooden surface before painting are:

  • Mineral spirit

  • Vinegar and water solution

  • Mild dish soap and water solution

  • Denatured alcohol and others

As for how to clean wooden furniture before painting, here is a simple process I follow:

  • I first clean the surface with a soft, clean cloth and make sure to get rid of dust and debris completely.

  • Next, I wipe the surface with a detergent and water solution two to three times.

  • I leave it to dry completely for around 20 minutes.

  • My next step is to sand the surface using 220-grit sandpaper.

  • I apply two coats of primer, let them dry, and finally apply the main paint two times.

  • I again leave it to dry completely for around 4 hours.

This process works well for me; hence, I will suggest you implement this method with whichever cleaning solution you feel will be the right choice.
