My civil engineer brother told me what is cantilever beam in civil engineering when I asked him to design a new one in my building. He told me that a cantilever beam is a beam that is free at one end and fixed on the other. In simple words, a cantilever beam is a type of beam that has one of its ends fixed while the other one hangs free in the air.

This type of beam transfers the load to the support and easily manages the moment of force and sheer force. Moment force is characterised as a force to twist or rotate an object while shear force is referred to as stress applied parallel to the material. Also, a cantilever beam can be built with a truss or slab.

The fixed beam’s free end is free to rotate or move but the fixed end isn’t and that’s why they’re primarily used in towers, car parking areas, bridges, etc.

Now you know what is meant by cantilever beam.

Where are Cantilever Beams Used

Without any bracing or supporting columns, cantilevers offer a clear space underneath the beam. I also want you to know that cantilevers have become a popular structural form with the introduction of reinforced concrete and steel.

The cantilever beam is used in;

  • Cantilever bridges.

  • Buildings.

  • Overhanging elements and projections.

  • Balconies

  • Machinery and plants like cranes.

  • Overhanging roofs such as stadium roofs and shelters.
