Hi Bhawana, I came across your question where you were asking about centring work in construction. Having majored in architecture, I can be of some help to you.

What is Centering Meaning in Construction?

So, centring can be understood as a temporary support, which is applied to only horizontal sections, such as slabs and floor beams.

This centring is built of steel or wood beams and provides a level surface for pouring concrete. The process also ensures structural integrity and precision. I’ll tell you how centring fulfils these two things.

Integrity:

With proper centring, the concrete is poured accurately and consistently, which helps in the prevention of weak or uneven places, thus resulting in better integrity.

Protecting the Concrete:

Centering reduces the damage and retains its intended shape by protecting it during its curing time. This shield helps the concrete to a great extent when it is still in a delicate state.

So, this is all I have to say about centring. I hope you now know the centring meaning in construction.

Let me share with you the meaning of house centring work in simple terms. While constructing a house, I come across new terms and concepts every day. My brother, a civil engineer, always explains some new terms whenever he sees a construction site. One time during the construction of our house, he explained the meaning of centring in construction.

Centering, centre, or center is a type of formwork. This is a temporary structure upon which stones of an arch or vault are laid during construction. Without proper support, an arch has no strength and that’s where centring is required. Centring is needed to keep the voussoirs in the correct positions. A centring without a truss is known as a common centring. When a cross piece is connecting the centring frame it is known as a lag or bolst.

  Types of centering in construction:
  • centering of wood

  • centering of steel

  • centering of glass-reinforced material

  • centering of aluminium

Centring is generally made up of wood to create a straightforward structure of a simple arch or vault. Stones and bricks are also used for constructing complex structures. After centring pointing and other finishes are required to complete the construction.

I checked what Monika has mentioned about house centring work and what she has mentioned is very much to the point. Along with reading my answer, I would recommend you check her answer as well. Her content is precise and up to mark.

Hey there,

I came to understand the concept of centering when I was buying a house for myself. I am aware that there are people who are not familiar with the concept of centering work but I must tell you that if you are planning on buying a house, you must be well aware of all these architectural structures. I was informed about the centering formwork by my builder when he was telling me the specifications of the building. It was from there that I started my research on centering work.

As you can already understand from Miss Monika’s response, shuttering is a vertical Formwork, while Centering Construction is a horizontal Formwork. Formworks for columns, walls, and sides of the beam, for example, are instances of shuttering, whereas the bottom of the slabs and the beam are examples of centering work in construction in a building. The construction of the centering and shuttering is critical. To provide a smooth working surface and uniform weight transfer, the slab floor should be exactly horizontal.

Equipments used for centering in house construction
  • Clamps

  • Ply Boards/Panels

  • Nails

  • Walers

  • Acrow Span

  • Adjustable Props with base plate

  • Battens

Meaning of centering in construction and how is centering done?

Soffits for slabs and beams are centred. Typically, a 3-layer thick waterproof plyboard is employed. Before casting a mould, the material's strength is tested and damages are checked.

  • Horizontal members should be homogeneous in thickness and lubricated correctly.

  • Plates must be exactly level and perpendicular to vertical members.

  • Fill up the gaps between the plates.

  • The staging is given at a 600 mm centre to centre interval.

  • The staging height is modified accordingly, and bracing is required at a distance of 4 feet from the ground.

  • The staging must be stiff enough to prevent deflection.

  • The depth of the to-be-cast beam and slab must be clearly marked.

  • The slab must be stripped for at least 3 days and the beam for at least 7 days, although the props must be removed after 14 days for a 4.5m span.

  • If any damage occurs, repairs must be made as soon as feasible.

I believe knowledge of centering work is critical before deciding the kind of house you are buying. I hope my response helps you in making that decision in a better manner.

If you are planning to buy a house, it is important to know how it was constructed. There are numerous benefits to the centering of formwork during the process of construction. I will help you understand what is centering in construction and types of centering.

What is centering :

Centering is a type of formwork. It is done during construction to support the formwork for horizontal surfaces including floor beams and slabs. It is set up for a temporary period of time. There are different types of centering.

The advantages of centering in construction :

  • provides support to the formwork

  • contributes to overall support

  •  Minimizes the chance of any part of the structure is stressed.

  •  ensures structures are in the correct position

  •  ensures the structure does not collapse

  •  shapes horizontal surfaces

Centering is done to support beams, slab bottoms, arches, vaults , shell-shaped structures etc.

There are different types of centering :

  • centering of wood

  •  centering of steel

  •  centering of glass-reinforced material

  •  centering of aluminum

What is formwork ?

Formwork is the combination of centering and shuttering. Formwork can easily be explained as the temporary structure used to support vertical as well as horizontal surfaces during construction. It provides support until the concrete dries.

It gives shape to fresh concrete and control to wet concrete. It aligns the concrete in the desired position.

What is shuttering?

On the other hand, shuttering is done during construction to support vertical surfaces. Both centering and shuttering are equally important during the process of construction.

I hope your question about centering in construction has been answered
