Hey buddy. I asked my best friend, an AC technician, what is central AC system before I bought one for my house. According to what he told me, a central AC is a system that uses a single unit to cool and circulate air across a building or house. Read on to find out more about central air conditioners.

What is Central Air Conditioning System?

Central AC removes the hot air with cool air that has been forced via cold coils and then delivers it to your living areas. Usually, it is installed on the roof of a house. It is set up in the center to concurrently supply every room and hallway with cool air via the cooling ducts.

Types of Central AC

Split systems and packaged systems are the two varieties of central air conditioning systems.

  • Split Central AC -

In this AC, an indoor cabinet houses the inside heat exchanger and blower and an outdoor cabinet houses the outdoor heat exchanger, fan, and compressor. Installing a split-system central air conditioner could be the most cost-effective option if your house already has a furnace but no air conditioning.

  • Packaged Central AC -

The compressor, fan, blower, and heat exchangers are all housed in a single cabinet in this AC. It is typically set up on a roof or a concrete slab close to the house's foundation. Small commercial buildings generally employ this type of central AC.

How Does a Central Air Conditioner Work?

My friend also informed me that a central AC operates in the following manner:

  • The thermostat activates the system when the inside temperature rises above your predetermined set point.

  • Warm air from within your house is drawn into return air ducts by the interior unit's fan. It is then filtered to eliminate dust and other airborne contaminants.

  • The air then travels across the cold evaporator coil. Here, the heat is taken in by the liquid refrigerant, which then transforms it into a gas and cools the air.

  • The cooled air is subsequently released into living areas by the blower fan.

  • Copper tubing carries the warm gas refrigerant to the compressor.

  • After that, gas is sent from the compressor, which is pressurised, to the condenser coil, which releases heat outside and converts the refrigerant back to liquid.

  • Finally, to complete the cycle, the refrigerant moves to the evaporator coil.

To keep the building's temperature constant and comfortable, this procedure is repeated continuously. I hope this answers your query about what is central AC.
