Hey friend,

I think concrete is versatile and the product can be used for various construction processes. It is used to make superstructures, pool patios, etc. When high-quality concrete is used and poured in the proper manner, it has a long life. If it isn't poured perfectly, spalling occurs. I will tell you what is spalling.

What is concrete spalling?

When concrete begins to crack and delaminate from the substrate, it is known as spalling. Concrete that has been cast begins to separate from the initial place. The process is also known as “flaking,” “peeling,” or “pitting.”

The material ( concrete) begins to spall because of different reasons such as freeze-thaw cycling, and the Alkali-Silica Reaction. The extra stress put on the precast concrete causes it to peel and break.

If you still have questions about spalling of concrete meaning, keep reading.

Spalling is also known as scaling. Basically, concrete breaks away from the solid body. The bits and pieces that break away in the form of small particles of cement paste.

You know the meaning of spalling concrete now. Let me tell you areas of higher risk of Spalling:

Coast :

The climate of the coastal area is salt-laden. The air is astringent and exacerbates rust. Salty air mixes with rain and penetrates porous concrete.

States :

There are many states that use rock salt for road maintenance in the winter months. The salt sticks to the car and melts in the driveway. It seems unto the concrete flatwork.

Cities :

Cities and urban areas have sulphate, sulphide, and other caustic compounds in the air due to pollution. It corrupts the rebar when the compounds mix with water. It damages concrete structures.

This is all from my end on what is spalling.
